How to choose a tent for beginners

Your tent is the most important piece of camping kit. Here's how to choose one that suits the way you'll camp.

Size

Tent capacity is a tight fit. For comfort, choose one size up: a 3-person tent for two people gives room for bags and gear.

Seasons

  • 2-season: light, for warm summer weather.
  • 3-season: the best all-rounder for spring, summer and autumn.
  • 4-season: for winter and mountains; heavier and more expensive.

Car camping vs backpacking

If you're parking next to your pitch, weight doesn't matter; choose space and comfort. If you'll carry it, look for a tent under about 2 kg per person.

Features to look for

  • A waterproof rating (hydrostatic head) of 2000 mm or more for the flysheet
  • A porch for boots and bags
  • Good ventilation to reduce condensation
  • Colour-coded poles for easy pitching

Try before you trust it

Pitch your new tent in the garden or a park before your trip, so you know how it works and that nothing is missing.
