What to pack for a day hike: the 10 essentials

Even on a short, easy hike, a few essentials help you deal with changing weather, small injuries or getting lost.

The 10 essentials

  1. Navigation: a map of the area and your phone with an offline map downloaded.
  2. Head torch: in case your hike takes longer than planned.
  3. Sun protection: sunglasses, sun cream and a hat.
  4. First aid kit: plasters, blister care, pain relief and any personal medication.
  5. Knife or multi-tool.
  6. Fire starter: matches or a lighter in a waterproof bag, for emergencies only.
  7. Emergency shelter: a lightweight foil blanket or bivvy bag.
  8. Extra food: more snacks than you think you need.
  9. Extra water: about 0.5 litres per hour of hiking in warm weather.
  10. Extra clothes: a warm layer and a waterproof jacket.

Choosing a day pack

A 20 to 30 litre pack fits everything. Look for padded straps, a hip belt and a rain cover.

Bonus items

A charged power bank, a whistle, and a small bag for your rubbish.
