How to plan your first day hike
Choosing a route, checking the weather and pacing yourself: a simple plan for a great first hike.
Day hiking is one of the easiest ways to enjoy the outdoors. A little planning keeps it safe and fun.
Choose the right route
Start with a well-marked trail of 5 to 10 km with modest climbs. Look for circular routes that start at a car park, and read recent reviews for trail conditions.
Estimate your time
A simple rule: allow about 1 hour for every 4 to 5 km on flat ground, plus an extra hour for every 600 m of climbing. Add breaks on top.
Check the weather
Look at the forecast the day before and the morning of your hike. Avoid exposed routes in high winds or storms, and turn back if the weather changes.
Tell someone your plans
Share your route and expected return time with a friend or family member.
On the trail
- Start early to leave plenty of daylight.
- Walk at a pace where you can still chat.
- Drink and snack little and often.
- Follow trail markers and check your map at junctions.
Trail etiquette
Leave gates as you find them, keep dogs under control near livestock, and step aside for uphill hikers.
