How to stay warm and sleep well when camping
Cold nights are the number one reason beginners don't enjoy camping. Here's how to fix that.
A cold, sleepless night can ruin a trip. Most of the warmth comes from what's under you, not just your sleeping bag.
Insulate from the ground
The ground pulls heat from your body all night. A good insulated sleeping mat makes more difference than a thicker sleeping bag. Air beds without insulation can feel cold; put a blanket or foam mat on top.
Choose the right sleeping bag
Check the "comfort" temperature rating, not the extreme rating, and pick one a few degrees lower than the expected overnight temperature.
Before bed
- Eat a warm meal and have a hot drink.
- Go to the toilet before getting into your bag.
- Do a few minutes of gentle exercise to warm up.
In the bag
Wear a dry base layer, warm socks and a hat. Don't sleep in the clothes you wore all day; they hold moisture. A hot water bottle in the bag is a great trick.
Ventilation
It sounds strange, but a little ventilation keeps you warmer by reducing condensation that dampens your bag.
